WHERE

Queensgate Neighborhood, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

We examinate the neighborhood of Queensgate since its beginnings in the late 18th century until the 21st century to illustrate the evolution of this neighborhood by examining maps, graphs, and charts that examine the urban landscape. Queensgate was originally part of the West End of Cincinnati. It arose through the concentration of industry in the lower Mill Creek Valley. In the 1800s it attracted numerous European immigrants (Ohio History Central). By the early 1900s, African Americans settled in the neighborhood. The neighborhood was demolished in the late 1950s as a result of urban renewal policies that focused on blighted areas. Today Queensgate is an industrial and business district that is more representative of a suburban than a central city locale. It no longer is a residential area.

STRATEGIES FOR FUTURE

Three strategies could be employed to heighten interest in attracting businesses and tourists to Queensgate.

  • The enhancement in the area around Union Terminal to attract more visitors. In 2015, Union Terminal received 1.44 million visitors (Cincinnati.com). It would seem obvious to try to capitalize on this interest and provide a greater array of activities/retail in this area to accommodate these visitors.

  • The planning improvement project could focus on investments along West Eighth to attract new businesses and a renovation of the streetscape that could increase non-motorized transport activity and infuse liveliness into the area.

  • The planning suggestion involves pursuing an industrial tourism strategy. Industrial tourism highlights key developments in the industrial evolution of the United States and is an environmentally friendly way to generate income through tourism.
